Tony Njoku unveils the staggering, hypnotic beauty of "On Lorca's Balcony" ahead of new album
In just over two and a half minutes, Tony Njoku perfectly captures those moments of complete vulnerability with absolute precision and striking honesty.
"I feel like the track is about exhaustion, frailty, vulnerability, insecurities", explains Njoku of the track's origins, before going on to explain the particular moment in time that the track embodies for him. "I remember suffering cabin fever as I hadn't left my house for a good 2-3 weeks straight. I was ill in bed for the most part, and had set up a work station right next to my bed: my laptop, microphone and a sound card."
Written at a time when he was down on his luck, the song is like a huge outpouring of emotion, if not a completely cathartic expression of the whirling emotions related to the feeling of uselessness and frustration that come paired with the complexity of having no energy left in the tank.
"I didn’t have the energy to play much on my keyboards or piano so I chopped up some old parts of other ideas in the same key, stuck it all together and kept humming the melody," He explains, adding "I had written the lyrics quite a while before this, but in that moment I related to them so much and just needed to reuse them. There’s a great deal of truth in there for me."
Yet, amongst the doubt that is deeply embedded within the song, Njoku finds a new inner strength and perseverance. When all hope seems to be completely lost and his vocals disappear into the ether, the song rises like a phoenix from the ashes, quickly spinning into another beast altogether, where a shockwave of brilliant synths bursts through in cataclysmic fashion.
The song is the beautiful closing track to his upcoming album H.P.A.C. which is released on 27 April.
