The Vryll Society show increasing intent with the alluring "Self Realisation"
Liverpool’s latest psychedelic export, The Vryll Society, have made it their aim to ensure they keep with the right sort of company. Tours supporting the likes of current NME darlings Blossoms as well as signing to local label Deltasonic (ome to The Zutons and The Coral among others) has exposed them to an audience keen for the equally vivid and nostalgic sound the band proudly boast.
The release of their debut EP Pangea last November as well as another tour with Blossoms, running from February to March, has continued to keep the five-piece on the right track, making them an increasingly present member of various ‘one’s to watch’ lists. New single "Self Realisation" signals that there may be a slight change in the air however. A sign of increasing intent, it promises that The Vryll Society are ready to step out on their own.
Leaving aside the self-prophesising nature of the title, "Self Realisation" is a confident move forward by the band, not only in terms of craftsmanship but also in terms of fixing their own identity. The interweaving guitar lines are locked into a tight rhythm, with strident bass and drums meticulously constructed giving the track its alluring nature. Although comparisons to classic Manchester bands are obvious, there's a sense of groove and improvisation that renders modern, expressive psychedelic acts such as Woods just as applicable a benchmark.
So far, The Vryll Society have never raised issues pertaining to their ability to craft and perform beautifully intricate and articulate psychedelic music. Now, however, they are beginning to make it their own.
