"The Sign" sees Frøkedal give extra weight to her typical minimalism
Having released a set of well-received singles last year, including the stirring "I See You", Frøkedal’s latest offering, "The Sign", is a more kinetic and active outing than we are used to from the Norwegian artist.
Taken from her forthcoming album Hold On Dreamer, "The Sign" proves that Frøkedal is capable of moving away from her typical minimalist approach and give some extra weight to her music. The only track from the album which features any drums, which arrive courtesy of Olaf Olsen of Bigbang and Todd Terje fame, Frøkedal’s charming vocals and accompanying keys find themselves the perfect companion in Olsen’s boisterous performance. The inclusion of brass in the outro adds further density to the composition by an artist who rarely ventures into such grounds.
Describing the track, Frøkedal explains how she managed this: "I tried the arrangement in several different settings, until Olaf and I pieced together a recording of it with him on the drums and me banging it out on an acoustic guitar at his house. And that's what you can still hear at the heart of the track. It’s the biggest arrangement on the album."
Hold On Dreamer is out 26 February via Propeller Recordings.
Regardless of whether it represents new ground for Frøkedal or not, "The Sign" is a joyous release leading up to the album. Listen to it below.
