Watch: The Range – “Telescope” [UK Premiere]
Arguably one of the brightest new producers of 2013, James Hinton aka The Range has carved out a world splattered with limitless possibilities and gasping with bouts of sullen introspection.
Melding Jungle, Footwork, Grime and RnB, Hinton’s debut LP Nonfiction is a playful, yet meticulous body of sounds that explores much more territory than just drum patterns and chord progressions. Through his music, Hinton introduces listeners to a dichotomy of emotions out of opposing treatments. Lofty, infinite feelings of singularity are juxtaposed with rushing bouts of fluttering excitement.
Nonfiction is the culmination of all of those ripped apart and exposed moments. This is nonfiction, this is real life. The past, the present and the future all unfolding miraculously together. Urges, desires, dreams and disappointments spill over the edges of the grainy television screen and onto the floor beneath your feet. This is what we have been living for.
Nestled between what could be the opening of a Drake track, “Sad Song” and Nonfiction’s breakout single ‘Metal Swing’ sits ‘Telescope.’ The track is a rushing grip of nostalgia that digs itself those deep folds of your cranium, forcing tightly wound emotions to quickly come unhinged.
In the video for “Telescope,” Hinton further explores the concept of the infinite, set against a backdrop of twinkling night. A symphonic wave soars above calculated crashes of percussion as playful vocal blips reel us back in from our infinite delight. Best Fit is proud to present to you the first visual accompaniment to one of the most beautifully complex albums of the year.
The Range’s Nonfiction LP is out digitally via Donky Pitch and on limited vinyl in collaboration withBerlin label Project Mooncircle.
