The Masks follow up "Save Me" with another stunner "Say How You Feel 2V15" [Premiere]
In the wake of the icy beauty of “Save Me”, anonymous London duo? collective? artists The Masks are preparing for the release of their forthcoming EP Black Heart Suite with “Say How You Feel 2V15”, premiering today.
The Masks are crafting their own dialect within the sprawling language of moody, electronic R&B, and their latest is a captivating new entry into their growing dictionary. There are phonetic roots that anchor all of the group’s work: airy vocals, beats that ricochet casually around the melody, synths (here, a piano) that push out to the song’s edges before being pulled backed into its core and dying out.
Their latest release uses those trademarks (as well as a nice twist: verses in the bridge that sound uncannily similar to Noname Gypsy with a British inflection) to explore the idea of communication, particularly the lack thereof that stymies relationships. It’s three and a half minutes of genuine empathy and passive-aggressive “I’m sorry you feel that way” apology rolled into one. “I can’t read your mind”, our narrator intones accusatorially; the voyeurism, the sense of being a fly on the wall during the kind of argument that might end a relationship would be cringe-inducing if it wasn’t all so lovely.
"We believe that music is the language of the soul, and 'Say' is expressing one) our belief in freedom of expression in a relationship to foster good relations and two) the freedom of expression in music as a cathartic and cleansing experience," The Masks say.
