Listen To The Five Best Songs This Week
A round of fresh music for your ears, here’s our pick of the best new tunes from the last seven days.
Fittingly posted on Best Fit on April Fools’ Day, Boston’s The Derevolutions laughed behind our backs a little with their flirty summer pop jam, “Now You Know My Name”. Although we’re clearly still quite far away from those halcyon days, the song stirs that distant cry of a festival, or that feeling the pollen on your lungs (no, not Saharan dust). Either way, “Now You Know My Name” is uncompromisingly good fun, jacked-up with chatty acoustics and ready to hit car speakers near you this summer.
Swiss producer and Black Butter Records signee Pablo Nouvelle delivered sultry sweetness on “Poison”, featuring French singer Tulliae. In all honesty, the track wouldn’t have quite the emotional tug without Tulliae’s effortless vocal, which weaves between tender house synths and chomping drum machine rhythms. Nouvelle’s version is a twist on Tulliae’s original, and a welcome one at that.
From one collaboration to another; Oxford RnB experimentalists Glass Animals teamed-up with wondrous New York artist, Tei Shi just shy of their new EP release (Monday 7 April). “Holiest” is one of the smartest pairings we’ve heard in months. The boys casually “sent her a couple of beats” to work with and the result is a mesmerising exploration of love and hate, metaphorically played out by Shi and vocalist Dave Bayley. Gloopy electronics and call-and-response gushes make it a stirring, sensual listen.
London-via-Kendal quarter Woman’s Hour have an uneasy ability to make you feel quite the opposite: at ease. Perhaps it’s vocalist Fiona Burgess’ comforting coo, or the recurring gentle guitar lines, or the band’s thoughtful electronic minimalism. Whatever it is, “Conversations” is another page torn from the lessons book, riddled with lyrics about self-confrontation. It’s strangely alluring and assuring stuff.
Last but not least, we were delighted to premiere the brand-new track by South London tropical pop lot, Beaty Heart. A tranquil piece of psych-pop, “Banana Bread” is another wacky look into the experimental trio’s imaginative world, not sounding too removed from the patchwork sounds of Animal Collective. They’ve just been announced as funk-pop group Jungle’s support act (full live dates here) and release their debut album Mixed Blessings in May.
