Listen: The Death of Pop - "Whenever" [Premiere]
Shoegaze/psych purveyors The Death of Pop are back with a jauntier affair than their previous creations on the lead single off their forthcoming EP, Fifths. “Whenever” premieres today on Best Fit.
Striking out with indie-pop oohs and a disorientating contrast of urgent bass and unhurried, lofty guitars, “Whenever” is an intelligent play-off between three-chord guitar pop and dreamier climes. The song’s earworm hook is all very well and pleasant, but it’s the middle eight that hears the London-based quintet do what they do best: lock us in shoegaze heaven.
“Whenever” is an enthralling interplay of genres that doesn’t wash over. Is it the death of pop? Not quite.
Catch the band on the following dates:
13 June - The Barfly, Camden, London (w/ King TV)
27 June - The Shacklewell Arms, London (w/ Tilapia)
Fifths is released via Art Is Hard Records as a flexidisc and zine on 28 July (pre-order here). “Whenever” will be available as a free download.
