Watch: The/Das – “My Made Up Spook” [Premiere]
When “Parallel Worlds” drifted from the miasmic interwebs to our ears, the return of Berlin twosome The/Das became an exciting prospect indeed. After their Speak Your Mind Speak EP - rammed with “techno tenderness” that fell upon impressed ears - any news of new noise from Fabian Fenk and Anton K. Feist (formerly of continental electronica stalwarts, Bodi Bill) was going to have the capacity to get us all in a fluster.
Now, the second single from debut LP Freezer is upon us. “My Made Up Spook” is reminiscent of SOHN’s soulful electronic pop, and in its dancier moments Jon Hopkins’ transcendental synthscapes. It’s a grander pop effort than the sounds from the EP and hints at great things from Freezer.
For the video, Fenk trekked to Mumbai, apparently pretty spontaneously, to record a clip with his girlfriend on the streets of the bustling metropolis. “My Made Up Spook” takes us through the markets of the city, past flower stalls and night time milieu lit by neon, unhindered by a prepared itinerary. It’s an intimate depiction of the couple in a foreign city, a bit like a surreal version of their holiday snaps. It’s simple, strangely elegant and stars an inflatable duck. What more do you need?
Freezer is due for release in August via Sinnbus.
