Coves – Last Desire

Bands who tussle with chiming fuzz smothered guitars and clattering percussion often find themselves victims of the much-maligned “slacker” tag but we can’t help feeling that anyone who tries to pin that badge on Rebekah Wood and John Rigard risks taking a weighty pop hook to the chin for their troubles.

From the undulating bass line which flows relentlessly through the melody, pulling in glittering streaks of disco synthesizer and slippery guitar along the way to Rebekah’s sulky sweet delivery, which aches of Alison Mosshart’s smoky tones; every single note on ‘Last Desire’ has been meticulously honed and expertly grafted into place. Coves succeed where so many have failed, capturing the deeply melancholy essence of Echo and the Bunnymen in a vibrant bubblegum film of woozy choruses and moreish guitar melodies. Slackers you say? Not a chance.

Autre Ne Veut – Play By Play

The massively anticipated album from Autre Ne Veut is set to drop on 25 February via the ever impressive Software label, here’s the latest cut to emerge – the massively addictive ‘Play By Play’.

Doused heavily in sexual fervour, ‘Play By Play’ hits hard from the off. Possessing a croon that rivals How To Dress Well’s Tom Krell in the white boy soul stakes, Ashin throws his voice full pelt across the song’s clattering R&B clicks and clattering drums. The delivery so powerful and sassy, it no doubt will result in the popping of many a bra strap.

Indiana – Bound

Haunting choir notes writhe and creep hehind Indiana’s shrill, sultrly cries, that feel almost too intimate to be sung aloud. Beneath a bassline that speaks to your body in all the right places, the singer’s take on soul flirts recklessly with R&B, crawling on it’s knees towards you ensuring your eyes (and ears) are locked for every move.

Jagwar Ma – The Throw

Another sublime offering from Australia’s Future Classic stable; a glorious throwback to the hedonistic days of Factory-era Manchester doused in super strength acid. Australian duo Jagwar Ma‘s latest single ‘The Throw’ is an irresistible dose of baggy pop that has the danceability of ‘Wrote For Luck’-era Happy Mondays with all the aggressive psychedelic gut punch of Primal Scream during their Kevin Shields (XLR8R) phase.

Enjoyed – Pieces

‘Pieces’ is the new track by Enjoyed, lifted from the electronic musician’s upcoming EP on Something In Construction - home to the likes of Memory Tapes, Philco Fiction and more, sounding like early Chad Valley in his most pensive, rather than partying, of moods. Listen to the tightened-up, and massively focussed new track from the electronic maestro beneath.

AZ&TOR – Resend

There’s a magnetic chemistry that’s ignited when Aisha Zoe and Richard Main come together to create. Once you’ve had a listen to ‘Resend’, you’ll see what we mean. Melodic tendrils cling to a 4-4 beat that gently pulls you closer, before wrapping it’s outstretched arms around you, then gently letting you go as you spin onto the dancefloor. Think the softer side of Alunageorge meets M.I.A., with a scope of influences ranging from reggae to dubstep. AZ&TOR’simpressive ability to blend beats and vocals into one incomparable sound is really something special.

The Slow Revolt – This Dark Matter

A lazy daydream of layers upon layers of bubby distortion coupled with a lyrical prowess that skips across the strings of your heart like a stone along the serene waters’ surface, these are just a few of the components lending to The Slow Revolt’s wonderfully refreshing sound.

The Slow Revolt’s debut single, ‘This Dark Matter’ is like looking at one’s own reflection in the shallow water of a gurgling creek. Singer and producer, Joe Mirza leaks colorful soundscapes onto muted, rippling images blending them together with a fluidity that hurriedly drifts along, ensuring the sunlight hits just right.

Face + Heel – Chipped Tooth

The moment you realize you’ve lived, loved, and admittedly lost…and would do it all again in a heartbeat. That slightly sharp edge you feel when you run your tongue along the enamel; a reminder of every step you took to get to where you are today. “Shake the trees, break the nest… Chipped tooth.” Cardiff/Bristol duo, Face + Heel‘s latest emotional heart tug, full of glossy harmonies and hidden bouts of pulsating soul is “just something they did over the weekend.”

Feeding People – Big Mother

Nineteen year old Jessie Jones channels the sweet innocent lilt of Billie Holiday one moment before paralysing you with her apocalyptic siren song the next. Add lashings of ear splitting snare and frenzied cymbals into the mix and you’re left with the blueprint for a bona fide psychedelic sludge rock hit.

Wolf Alice – White Leather

Fast-rising London fourpiece, Wolf Alice stream the b-side to their current single ‘Fluffy’. ‘White Leather’, probably not written about future plans to buy a new sofa, laments on those flickering chances that pass by as you eye up a potential partner.
