"Alkaline" is another trippy shape-shifter of a track from Thandii
Thandii's lush '70s infused new effort sees her dealing with the strains of a relationship that is in serious trouble, diving into the very depths of the issues at hand.
The Margate-based artist's second single of the year is another example of her tirelessly creative nature that pushes the very boundaries of what a pop song can sound like.
It's deliciously experimental, swimming through moods and riding through lo-fi moments to huge expansive melodic landscapes. When she sings "I'll jump in first / The water looks so cold" it only adds to the sinking feeling, steadily going downwards into the abyss.
"I started writing the song at the Rhodes and lyrically I was thinking about the push and pull of a volatile relationship and how that could relate to the physical and chemical world. At the time I was in an acid relationship and trying to keep it more neutral. Hence alkaline added to an acidic situation," Thandii explains the message that lies at the heart of the track and the experience that lies behind it.
"The song goes on a bit of a lyrical and (possibly unexpected) musical journey. Musically things get more and more cosmic and spacy towards the end and lyrically I end up at ‘so I’ll leave here maybe tomorrow’ trying to cut and run from the relationship, but still end up unresolved, going in circles ‘over and over how well do I know you’. This song might be a bit of a journey but ultimately I wanted it to feel like a cycle you can get lost in, with seemly no resolution.”
