Kicking off with an infectious rhythm, the vibe on TEME's latest single is inescapably positive.
On your first listen to "HA LF", it's almost a surprise when Florence Welch’s vocals don’t make an appearance, such is the machine-like groove.
Comprised of JJ Hodari and Bo Morgan, TEME have form for “fascinating sonic offerings”. This latest single, “HA LF”, taken from the duo’s upcoming EP of the same name, solidifies their status as artists who create dynamic soundscapes, drawing on influences including Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver.
After the upbeat start, there’s a brooding wind-down, before everything swells again, lifted by the soothing timbre of Hodari's vocals. The addition of rich brass (courtesy of trio Dan Berry, Jonny Murray and Josh Arcoleo) creates a subtle warmth, adding an extra charming layer to the song.
Explaining why they utilised an unconventional structure for the track, TEME said "after the song builds to its crescendo it dissolves into the kind of deeper, more lucid introspection that comes after any kind of manic episode. There’s an acknowledgement of the situation, a rational look at the triggers, and the self-harm one is causing by acting this way."
The pause creates a sombre moment within a largely upbeat track, providing ample opportunity for introspection. Regardless, there will undoubtedly be many hazy summer evening memories soundtracked by "HA LF" over the coming months. Soak it up while you can.
