Vancouver quartet Teenagre bring their emotionally charged chamber indie to the wider world with their debut track, “Visitor”.
The band, Matthew Friesen, Erik Hermans, Zuzia Juszkiewicz and Eva Prkachin, cite their influences as a general wave in the direction of 70s music, creating what they describe as both “dark dance” and “prom jangle”. Certainly, judging by “Visitor”, it skirts around the edges of pop and indie.
The song is characterised by Juszkiewicz’s supremely elegant vocal theatrics and is surrounded by layers of initially chirping guitars as the accompaniments waltz through your ears. Ambitious and dexterous despite its debut status, the song lilts and twists, the guitars taking on the task of delivering swooping melodies as they step into the limelight. It’s the chorus though that hangs most in memory: warm, dreamy melodies that make you thirty to hear more.
Visit again soon, Teenagre.
