Watch: Taylor And Marie - "Bad Moon Rising" [Premiere]
Up and coming folk duo Taylor And Marie (made up of Jodie Marie and Samuel Taylor) have debuted the first glimpse of their work in a filmed performance of their cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Bad Moon Rising”, which sets them apart as a partnership in the vein of June and Johnny Cash, or Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.
It’s a simple video, shot in black and white, that effortlessly captures the same stark aesthetic as the Coen Brothers’ 2013 ode to the folk-era “Inside Llewyn Davis”. Such an approach ties into the values the pair are striving to celebrate, embracing the way music used to be created, when musicians “got together to play music just because they loved sharing the stage with another artist and it worked really well with that person.”
Even at a first glance the video proves the chemistry between Taylor and Marie is undeniable. Their vocals feel individually fractured, as though requiring each other to form a whole; with Marie’s soft bluesy tone harmonising gently against Taylor’s denser, more mournful voice, and accompanied by his impassioned harmonica playing.
The original is a classic, and any reinterpretation faces the challenge of comparison. Taylor and Marie have assuredly put their own spin on the cut, repurposing it as a unvarnished ditty, evoking their predecessors with a streamlined focus on the emotion carried in their voices. As the starting point which inspired their forthcoming Tilt the Moon EP, it bodes remarkably well, suggesting the pair may yet shoot new life into a genre that many would argue has lain largely dormant for too long.
