Listen: Swim Mountain - "Yesterday"
If you’re getting tired of nu-disco, I don’t blame you. Like old disco, the cheap thrills quotient is high but there are steep diminishing returns. If you’re still digging the stuff, well that’s great too, because here we have a tune heady and danceable enough, yet twisted sufficiently into something different, to satisfy both camps.
London quartet Swim Mountain’s first feature here at Best Fit was on our new music podcast, where they displayed an impressive handle on the swirling, gauzy psych sound proffered by Tame Impala on their introductory single, “Dream It Real”. Their latest single, “Yesterday”, from their upcoming self-titled debut EP, retains that same woolly ambience, but injects it with a mobility that grounds it firmly on the dance floor.
The band has professed their affinity for Latin beats, which is prominently on display here in the form of a nimble, syncopated rhythm guitar, while each verse is capstoned with undoubtedly one of the earwormiest guitar riffs this year. Naturally, in an effort to keep even that from going stale, “Yesterday”‘s last 30 seconds drops the tempo on a dime and rides a jaunty, sunwashed coda out that would make Brian Wilson blush.
Swim Mountain’s eponymous debut EP is out on 29 September courtesy of Hey Moon (pre-order here).
