Strange Names’ ‘’Into Me’’ showcases their punctuated synth-pop against ego and insecurity

The latest darlings of Frenchkiss Records (Diet Cig, Local Natives), Strange Names, have released their latest single ‘Into Me’ ahead of their second record, due out early 2018.

A love song first and foremost, ‘’Into Me’’ refuses to abide by tradition. Strange Names forego the typical formula of portraying the protagonist as a victim, deciding rather to gift him a sense of control (‘’I heard that you’re so ordinarily, extra into me’’) and wrongdoing (‘’I’m the other love in the guest house’’). These notions, however, are drawn against obvious questioning and doubt, (‘’When I saw you twist and fade/Under the impression you would stay the same’’), giving the situation a complexity and no clear moral fibre to refer to, making it seem just a little more real.

Punctuated by Strange Names' synth-pop backing, ''Into Me'' is as such a delight. Non-conforming yet instantly recognisable, it carries the bands flag for rd, and bolsters their reputation as an act capable of keeping their audience intrigued.
