Listen: Star Horse - "Don't Get Closer"
It’s easy for bands attempting to cut their teeth in the resurgence of shoegaze to get lost along the way. But Sweden’s Star Horse stand out like an extremely compelling and commanding sore thumb.
Following up from 2013’s Devour EP, the final release from a triology of interest-sparking EPs bridging 2012 and 2013, “Don’t Get Closer” is a punchy yet laid-back slice of shoegaze nostalgia that still manages to remain extremely current in the vein of fellow drone-pop admirer’s Pity Sex.
With a chorus that flourishes throughout and guitars that create a continuous wave of drone that seamlessly carries and contends with singer Maja’s soft, dreamy vocals, “Don’t Get Closer” is the spirited, noise-pop coated twin to “100 Eyes”’ subdued, affecting coolness.
With releases penned for the near future, Star Horse’s Jekyll and Hyde pairing of “Don’t Get Closer” and “100 Eyes” is an intriguing and alluring foresight into more than one corner of their smoldering and intoxicating brand of shoegaze, and a mesmerising expansion on their previous work.
