Speedy Ortiz offers a glimpse behind the curtain on the demo of "Basketball" [Premiere]
So, full disclosure – I kinda like Speedy Ortiz.
So, fortune kinda smiles upon us here at Best Fit as we are pleased to premiere an original Speedy Ortiz demo of 2012’s “Basketball” as part of Carpark Records’ 16th anniversary compilation.
Generally, demos are only marginally enlightening if at all, but here we are granted not only a peek at the song in its most embryonic state, but original lyrics that had been both changed and omitted for the final cut.
Ultimately becoming the snappy power-pop lead track on the band’s Sports EP, the demo unearths the tale of hollow schoolyard sex between the cheerleader and jock. Unadorned and slowed down, Sadie Dupuis – perhaps unwittingly – conveys the emptiness behind an act the cheerleader likely (and sadly) presumes is something that comes with the territory.
Carpark’s Sweet 16 Basketball Picture Disc, which features other artists such as TEEN and Toro Y Moi performing largely basketball-themed tunes, releases 21 July exclusively on the label site and can be preordered now.
