Listen: Sophie Jamieson – “Stain”
“I hope what happened here isn’t a stain on us, dear”. Berkshire singer-songwriter Sophie Jamieson recounts the emotional spoilage of a stale relationship with the bleak, spartan intensity of Marissa Nadler or Sharon Van Etten on her latest single, “Stain”.
Growing up amidst her mother’s Irish folk music has endowed Jamieson’s sound with a traditionalist hue which, combined with her desolate murmur, projects shades of early Laura Marling. Where Jamieson distinguishes herself is her coalescence of her old world austerity with the burnished onyx of her dream-pop accents.
You can feel the flutter of the undulating guitar’s cold fingertips and the feedback’s frosty breath at the nape of your neck. By letting her steely frills creep and recoil as she locks her countenance, her vocals undeterred, Jamieson concurrently allows the song to move while unquestionably commanding its presence.
“Stain” and its double A-side counterpart, “Other”, are released on 19 May courtesy of LuvLuvLuv Records. You can see Jamieson supporting Rhodes solo on 9 April at the Sebright Arms, and with her band on 10 April at The Old Queen’s Head, both in London.
