Canadian duo Softcult can't be tamed on grunge-pop debut "Another Bish"
Pairing anthemic melodies with scuzzy guitars Ontario-based twins Phoenix and Mercedes Arn-Horn are this alt-pop outfit's cult leaders.
Classically trained in piano, voice, cello and guitar the Arn-Horn twins aren't strangers to the world of music, but Softcult is a totally new venture for them. Having performed together for over a decade in the band Courage My Love, their new chapter starts now.
A reaction to the misogyny and sexism they've faced spending their formative years in the spotlight, Softcult lets them do what they want on their own terms with no-one to answer to but themselves. Moving on from cheery Paramore-esque electro-pop of last year's Courage My Love EP Spectra, "Another Bish" is full of edge.
Their social media bio states they make "music for mall goths" and naming Bikini Kill and Smashing Pumpkins as two of their biggest influences, Softcult certainly ride in on the wave of '90s nostalgia in terms of their sound and aesthetic.
"Even the baddest bish probably has a little bit of self-doubt," they say. Armed with inclusive feminist anthems and a need to be outspoken as they carve out their new path, the Arn-Horns will be taking no shit as they prepare to roll-out their infallible new music.
