Sofía Valdés shares striking re-imagining of Gwen Stefani classic "The Sweet Escape"
The Panamanian artist puts her unique spin on the bombastic pop single which is now a soothingly tropical, reverb-drenched slow jam.
Set to be part of the singer/songwriter's upcoming debut EP Ventura, her rework of the track showcases why it's time to fall fast for Sofía Valdés' signature sound. Having dropped singles "Handful of Water" and "Little Did I Know" earlier in the year, of tackling a cover she says, "I thought it would be fun to take something so different than my style and make it my own."
Her first two tracks sound very similar to what she's done here, laidback DIY indie-pop with splashes of substance, bossa nova influences and nods to her rich familial heritage. The granddaughter of acclaimed performers Miguelito "El Babalou" Valdes and the "Queen Of Tamborera" Silvia de Grasse, there's music in her blood.
"I grew up knowing the song pretty well, since my mom would play it in the car a lot," Valdés continues. "She would blast the song with the windows down. I would get furious because I was super sensitive to loud sounds and wind would make my hair messy, I was 6. But it’s now such a sweet memory."
