Following on from “Blud” – her first official release on CHVRCHES’ Goodbye Records – SOAK has unveiled her latest piece of stripped-back folk melancholia.
Where its predecessor offered uplifting glimmers of hope, “24 Windowed House” is a chilling, more nightmarish cut; “I am afraid of sleep / from depth of heavy heart to my heavy feet” the young Derry singer cries, bringing to mind the sadness and desperation of recent Laura Marling.
The introduction of crashing cymbals, a rumbling pedal and gentle vocal distortion heightens the sense of fear, bringing a new level of power to her writing, but takes nothing away from the poise and character of her music.
SOAK plays a headline show at St Pancras Church, London on 10 April. The Blud EP is out now.
