Listen: Slime – “Patricia's Stories”
Newcastle-bred producer Will Archer, aka Slime has dropped new cut “Patricia’s Stories”, the lead track off new mixtape In The Brick House. It’s his first release since 2011’s Increases EP.
Featuring Chicago rapper Jeremiah Jae, the track lends itself to the sonic environment inhabited by the likes of James Blake and Flying Lotus’ alter ego, Captain Murphy. Toeing the line between organic and electronic, a clean, simple piano melody is backlit by beats that drop in and out of focus, shaded with a woozy vocal sample that seems to fall away just as you’ve got a handle on it. Lyrically, it’s the usual tale of a doomed relationship, with Jae’s smooth, almost mumbled delivery encapsulating the kind of observational, heavily naturalistic flow that perfectly suits the low key sound without losing the emotive qualities of the story.
It’s a fantastically pleasurable listen, but one that rewards repeat plays. It lacks the bravado common to rap and the aural density of much electro, but in breaking away from the strictures of genre it manages to lay down roots in an incredibly promising middle ground.
