Astrid S and Bebe Rexhe writer SHY Martin steps into the spotlight with debut single "Good Together"
SHY Martin (born Sara Hjellström) has written for and sang with the likes of The Chainsmokers, Mike Perry, Kygo, Astrid S and Bebe Rexhe, but now the Swede is stepping into the spotlight with her debut solo single.
"Good Together" starts with subtle keys and SHY Martin's enticing cooed vocals, before a beat drops in that's part dancehall, part R&B and completely addictive.
What's really impressive about the song - aside from the uncompromising chorus filled with fruity language - is that SHY Martin seems to have a confident and fully-formed personality, and isn't afraid to show it. Like Julia Michaels, another song writer stepping out from the shadows, SHY comes armed with knowledge of the industry and ready for any bullshit wastemen.
"The song is about a relationship where you come to the point of not knowing whether you are a bad match or if you’re good together," says the Swede. "It's a destructive kind of love and I guess that everyone has been there or will find themselves there at some point. During the session, I felt that the song connected with me in a different way than other songs I’ve written. I told the other writers: 'if no one takes this song I’m releasing it myself’. I even sneaked out the session and told my manager who was working in the same building that this song felt special. And the moment I told her she said: 'we're not pitching this, this is your song'. I didn’t have any plans of releasing music under my own name at that point so I never thought it would actually happen. But from that moment the idea of releasing my own songs kept growing."
SHY Martin is also a key member of Spotify’s new Equalizer project, co-founded by Max Martin and Daniel Ek in an effort to lift the glass ceiling off of the music industry and fight for the rights of song writers. "Good Together is a damn good start.
