Shine 2009 combine Manchester and Ibiza on the dreamy Europop of "Happy"
Finnish duo Shine 2009 made their comeback earlier this year with the brilliant "D4WYL", and they've followed up quickly with another new track.
The Helsinki-based pair of Sami Suova & Mikko Pykäri don't ever really change their pop palette, but when they make songs as good as "Happy" why should they?
Synths swirl around '90s Factory beats, a piano line moves between mournfulness and Balearic bliss, and Suova's worn-out, lovelorn vocal actually delivers a message of - on the face of it - positivity. It's hard not to chuckle, though, as he urges, drolly, "don't be so sad, smile with me". “The protagonist of ‘Eurozone’ is back," Shine 2009 tell us, "to present his shallow, mechanistic and oppressive views on happiness”
Shine 2009's nostalgia always teeters on the brink of sadness, but there's an ecstasy within which pulls it back, keeps their music coming up.
