Listen: Seyr - "Tainted" [Premiere]
Seemingly emerging from the darkness of a noir, Seyr are a duo from the south of England who formed in late 2013. Since then, they have created tracks and worked on visuals that are being released one by one, finally grouped into the collection, Nights Without EP, on 6 October. The French drama-inspired duo premiere their latest release, “Tainted”, on Best Fit.
“Tainted” has the haziness and home-bred quality of electronic-tinted lo-fi. Recorded under what seems like light bedsheets in a pitch black bedroom, the track features minute instrumentation, including gently strummed guitars and urban samples running at a crackling, bellowing pace. The beautifully soulful and unrestrained vocals emerge amidst the purring composition, like a morning bird singing victoriously out into the night.
Seyr said: “Everything was just recorded at home in our rooms, starting out by looping ideas and guitar parts, and then it developed from there. The music was mainly inspired by the frame of mind we were in at the time of starting the song. These ideas were sparked usually late at night &/or early hours of the morning so it reflects that kind of head space you’re in at those times, which then led us to the title ‘Nights Without’
“These songs seem to follow that theme as well so it seemed like a nice fit. I guess it reflects both the restlessness and calmness you get in those times as they start out quite sparse. The lyrics were some what encouraged by the mixed emotions that were felt at the time of writing, mainly consisting of, confusion, love, paranoia and realisation.”
The visuals for “Tainted” show violet-tinted images of a city at night, with the occasional spruce of yellow lampposts that intrude the clip like menacing cats’ eyes. They are perfect scenes for a live set; a foggy vision set to an equally gauzy track:
