Watch: September Girls – “Sister”
Fresh from the success of their SXSW appearance, Dublin’s impossibly cool September Girls release the video for “Sister”, the closing track from their critically acclaimed debut, Cursing The Sea.
With a decidedly unique take on what a modern girlband is and with the same, intimidatingly accomplished spirit as fellow dark pop purveyors and previous tourmates PINS, September Girls’ blend of distorted noise pop takes an almost Joy Division-esque turn on current release, “Sister”.
It’s clear from the outset that “Sister” is a song that is unapologetic in its darkness, both musically and topically. The video to accompany the startlingly honest, affecting comment on rape culture that “Sister” tackles reflects this. With a simplistic yet powerful set-up that sees the band cloaked in a black backlight, with intermittent spatters of colour reminiscent of a My Bloody Valentine album cover and effects that warp the girls into some kind of ridiculously cool looking Rorschach painting, the video for “Sister” echoes the bleak but powerful message of the song without overshadowing it, and perfectly compliments the fuzzy guitars and impending beats that are peppered throughout the song. The track showcases September Girls not only as a band who make the kind of music that every girl who grew up idolizing the laid-back cool of Patti Smith dreamt of making, but as a socially aware and confident group of musicians at the forefront of combating perceptions.
Similarly naming their band after The Bangles’ cover of the Big Star song of the same name was always going to make September Girls that bit more endearing – especially with gritty, shoegaze influenced anthems such as “Sisters”.
