Listen: Seafret - "Angel Of Small Death And The Codeine Scene" (Hozier cover - live) [Premiere]
After impressing earlier this year with their debut EP Give Me Something, North Yorkshire's Seafret are preparing for a support gig with chart-topper Hozier by covering one of the Irishman's more menacing cuts, "Angel of Small Death And The Codeine Scene".
Recording live with Zane Lowe as part of the BBC's Maida Vale series, the duo don't have the luxury of hiding behind layers of production here but they manage to pull it off without a hitch. Initially armed only with a single acoustic guitar and a voice that's every bit the match of the man who made the original recording, the boys do an excellent job of staying true to the original while putting their own spin on things. Eventually, they receive an assist from a lovely string section that more or less takes the place of the original track's organ. It transforms the original's drug ballad feel into something more fantastical and mysterious, but no less inspired.
Listen below, and catch them supporting Hozier on his UK tour in January.
