Rising talent Sampha – he of the shudderingly distinct voice we know so well from collaborations with SBTRKT, Drake and Jessie Ware – has emerged today with the first track from his upcoming debut EP Dual.
Riding the groundswell of expectation he’s fostered over more than three years, ‘Without’ sees the 23-year old South Londoner deliver a beautifully skittery infusion of truncated funk, carried along by Sampha’s interlaced vocals that bring together vulnerable R&B inflections with a husk of a more classic jazz inflection.
It’s as beautiful as you might expect and delivers on all levels – not least the confirmation of Sampha as an innovative songwriting talent.
