Experimenting with Sam Smith’s beautiful ballad ‘Safe With Me’, Long Beach producer Marce Reazon toys with Smith’s vocals and layers his own electric guitar, quick-hitting drums and claps to add a certain sensuality to the tune.
Marce Reazon seems to have his fingers in quite a few jars. He’s worked as an engineer for Kanye West, though he’s also a skilled remixer, judging by this ever-so-seductive rework.
Reazon’s take starts minimally with hard-hitting drum and bells. Filtering Smith’s vocals during the first verse, he capitalizes on the skittering percussion, matching Smith’s chorus to skip on beat. He then strips away the layered percussion, instrument by instrument, two minutes in to give way to a muffled, thumping dance rhythm.
Perhaps the unsung hero of Reazon’s mix is the song’s original producer. Two Inch Punch’s clever ‘my heart skips a beat’ sample loop is a rather addictive one. The track slows a bit before introducing Smith’s crooning second verse, which the newcomer emphasizes with an impromptu electric guitar solo. A pretty great remix of an already impressive track.
