Saltwater Sun return with a dark, driving takedown of life’s great annoyances on “Mouthbreather”
The riffs are still roaring and the rage is still very much present on the biting “Mouthbreather” - Saltwater Sun's most accomplished sounding single to date.
After steadily adding colossal tracks such as “Blood” and “The Great Deceiver” to their growing discography in 2019, this latest cut manages to dwarf the Reading band’s previous output. Jen Stearnes’ vocal is melodic, drawing comparisons to Wolf Alice and Dream Wife, while it acts as a vessel for the track's frustration and exasperation.
“It’s understandable to feel helpless and angry in a period of time where there seems to be so much wrong with the world and so little we can do personally to affect change,” say the band. “Sometimes, we use hostility as a means for getting our voices heard. It's so easy to get dragged down into petty arguments with people whose viewpoints differ to yours and most of the time those arguments are hugely counter-productive, like banging your head against a brick wall.
"I personally can get completely enraged by something so insignificant, such as loud chewing or bad driving, for example, and even though those types of people definitely do suck, I have to take a couple of steps back and laugh at how ridiculous I’m being. This song embodies that, poking fun at ourselves (because let’s face it - we’re all irritating to someone) and at the plethora of people who get on our nerves, rather than getting weighed down by it all.
“Musically, ‘Mouthbreather’ felt like a good vehicle for this, as we’ve ramped it up here - we listen to a lot of heavy music as a band, it’s what we were raised on; people often remark that our live show is a lot heavier than our recorded sound, so we wanted to inject some of that energy and vibe into our writing in order to show people, particularly those who haven’t seen us yet, another facet of Saltwater Sun. Mostly though, it’s just really fun to play.”
Having built a strong following for their live setup, they continue to better themselves with each piece of new music. 2020 looks set for Saltwater Sun.
