Saint Sister's heavenly harmonies brighten the corners of loss on "Causing Trouble"
Following on from an acclaimed show at Eurosonic in January, Irish duo Saint Sister are back with a beautiful new track
On "Causing Trouble", Morgan MacIntyre and Gemma Doherty have added a little bit of urgency to their "atmosfolk", and it comes in part from a focus on rhythm.
Using the gorgeous plucks of harp strings as a sort of anchor alongside snapping electronic percussion and the insistent ripple of cymbals gives the track a gentle, rocking-back-and-forth swing. It is, however, the heavenly harmonies of MacIntyre and Doherty which holds "Causing Trouble" together.
"The song is about transitioning, from Belfast to Dublin, from an old love to a new," says MacIntyre, "and the gaps that can be found between you and another person or place when people transition at different paces and in different directions."
A song about reaching out for something lost in the past - as the lines "but honey, I know you / we dance to Elvis in the kitchen / at least we used to" reveal - the voices of Saint Sister entwine in a gleaming chorus that's part hope, part regret, and wholly beautiful.
