Safari Gold bring soothing new single "Tide" [Premiere]
After playing to a sold-out crowd at their first headline gig in their hometown, Cardiff quartet Safari Gold are preparing for their upcoming UK tour with the release of “Tide” today on Best Fit.
Though previous single “Howl” earned them comparisons to the shiny, upbeat pop of The 1975, “Tide” is somewhat more subdued, moving in natural, soothing rhythms apropos to its title. But that doesn’t mean the sound is any less slick: steel drum sound-alikes rise slowly to accent the verses, then shimmer and pop like bubbles reaching the surface, and chords are formed from hammer-ons as though completing a thought.
“Tide” doesn’t give the impression of water rising and retreating, or of a timeless tug-of-war between a planet and its far-away moon; it carries a sense of resignation and relief, like slowly lowering into a tub full of warm water. Despite what songwriter Danny says, it sounds like one of the planetary players in this interstellar struggle has given up the fight and longingly left orbit with more than a few regrets.
Danny says: "'Tide' is part of our plan for a release in 2016. It doesn't have that instant feel about it which we like... the song is about unexplainable connections between people despite not seeing someone in person. Hopefully it says to people that sometimes it's better to not try and rationalise everything if it feels right."
