SACRE treat the world to glitzy debut "Gaia"
Parisian duo SACRE release debut single "Gaia" with its shimmering synths and intergalactic appeal.
As debut releases go SACRE are definitely onto something. With its rolling drum line and abundant hand claps, "Gaia" is a triumph of minimalistic electronic pop. The French pair's first release sees them flex their genre-bending sound, calling on disco influences and peaking with a lush falsetto-led chorus.
"Gaia" and its experimentalism comes from a place of exploration, as the band explain: "We wrote [this track] as an ode to life, thinking about the rise and fall, thinking how we all are standing on the same planet, how we are dancing the same ballet." The poetry doesn't end in the lyrics, as evident, in the the quote, the band also write on their Soundcloud that "we believe that yellow and blue is the beginning of everything. We believe 64 is a good number. We believe music is love. We are SACRE."
Meaning sacred in English, SACRE are not just playing the name game with their band name, "Gaia", in case you weren't aware, is the Greek mythological personification of Earth, and also the name of a complicated hypothesis proposed by scientist James Lovelock. The gist of Lovelock's proposal, which has been revised numerous times, is that Gaia is a complex entity which involves the Earth's biosphere, atmosphere, oceans and soil which together seek to create an optimal environment to support life on this planet.
