Watch: Royal Canoe – “Button Fumbla” [Live Video Premiere]
Royal Canoe are a tribe-like six-piece from Winnipeg, Canada, who arm themselves with tons of instrumentation to create indefinably weird pop. Following two EPs in 2012, the band released their debut JUNO award-nominated album Today We’re Believers in 2013, and in the midst of an incessant US/Canadian tour, have recently cut out some time to shoot live material in-studio. -
“Button Fumbla”, the latest extract from their album, is a smooth, intricate piece of urban funkiness given the live video once-over by the band. Filmed in Private Ear Studio in Winnipeg, it was directed by Mike Maryniuk and is anything but your average live studio session. The sextet, with the aid of an all-female chorus trio, recreate to a T the sensual multi-instrumental track. Surrounded by icy stalagmites and stalactites of plastic, glass and shiny paper, the band displays their polycentric efforts, lit up only by dim psychedelic hues of primary colours. Although the theme of ice is central, as projected by the video’s title screen, the track is a warm, voluptuous mix of electronica and lyrical genius.
Royal Canoe will play this year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee on 13 June. They plan to return to the UK later this year.
