Rhys could be the next big Swedish pop export as she ups the ante with “Last Dance”
Sweden’s Rhys announces herself as a serious contender in the world of pop with brand new single “Last Dance”.
When we were told debut “Swallow Your Pride” was “just a teaser” and that the proper single from Rhys would be with us early this year we weren't sure what to expect.
Having hit the studio with Jörgen Elofsson (Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson) it's now clear where his influence comes into play. The dancehall-inflected electro-pop of “Last Dance” is suitably on trend, but luckily her vocal still carries the sentiment of the track’s nostalgic lyrics.
Playing with the juxtaposition of melancholy lyrics with the more upbeat production, Rhys cements her place in the scandi-pop bracket with this timeless parallel. The song sees Rhys battle to the end of a relationship, that despite being over she's adamant she'll endeavour to remember the good times even if the love was only ever an “illusion”.
As Rhys herself explains “'Last Dance' is a bittersweet love song. What I love about it is the way it manages to tell a sad story all the while being accompanied by happy music. Of course, this song can be interpreted in many different ways, depending on the listeners own experiences - but to me it’s about knowing that the end of a relationship is near and being willing to except the consequences because you did your best to save it.”
