REYNA's "Heartbeat" marks the arrival of the freshest pop sibling duo of 2019
Haim have got it down. Oasis, not so much. There's something about that sibling bond, though, that can make for magic in the studio. Milwaukee-based sister duo REYNA are doing just that.
On recent single "Heartbeat", the pair – who nod to their Mexican heritage in the track's excellent new video – serve up euphoric, note-perfect synth-pop delight in the vein of Carly Rae Jepsen or Dagny. It's no wonder they've already been snapped up to tour in support of names like Kesha and CHVRCHES. "Heartbeat" – the latest in a string of superb singles spanning since 2016 – sets a classic, yearning pop narrative to rubbery guitar lines and an expansive, unselfconscious chorus.
It's no surprise sisters Victoriah and Hannah Gabriela Banuelos are delivering such polished cuts: although REYNA is a relatively new project, the pair were making music together as Vic & Gab for several years previously. Despite not unremarkable succes – single "So Long So Tired" featured in US TV show Skins, and they played for 18,000 at Obama's re-election rally – their pivot from generic indie to effervescent power-pop is extremely welcome.
REYNA look towards a debut EP in the near future, but are already tipped as one of pop's next big things. With over three million Spotify streams under their belt and nods from Billboard, HMV, and Beats1, the future looks pretty damn bright. All hail the new (well, reincarnated) queens of pop, amirite?
