Reptaliens put a charming spin on stalking with "Nunya"
Looking for a daily dose of lizard people now that Ted Cruz has dropped out of the American presidential race? Look no further than the far more enjoyable Portland husband-wife duo (and occasional quartet) Reptaliens.
Never has a "Forced Entry", a creepy stalker photographer, or a general fascination with cult mentality sounded so good. On "Nunya", the duo are charming as ever, enveloping a beautifully subtle saxophone and bright, twinkling synths into their characteristic lo-fi sensibility as singer Bambi Browning rides a classic melody all the way to your window, girl. All those happy sounds don't give the subject matter a pass, however. There's a sense of foreboding lurking beneath the allure, buried somewhere in the song's swampy bottom end and its slightly sluggish tempo, that will keep you coming back in an attempt to put your finger on it. Alas, it may be as elusive as a model who knows someone is following her, camera in hand.
Bambi had this to say of the track:
"'Nunya' was written by Cole and I. It's about a photographer who thinks he has a relationship with this celebrity, but in reality he is a delusional stalker who just has a digital camera and a deranged obsession with this model babe. It was super fun to write - it was really fun to imagine the emotions and struggles of a stalker, and to embody the song with what he might be thinking and feeling and seeing and how that might sound spilled over into a recording.
"Cat Hoch (#2 on Willamette Week's 'Best New Band' list) laid down the drums, which were recorded by none other than the Bryson Hanson (Fog Father/Reptaliens synth and production band member) and features Cole's dad Lex Browning on saxophone, and our friend Tim Hart who let us record vocals in his garage studio and who also did the final mix as well. Tim also has a full-size pet pig who was in the recording studio with us the whole time and I want to let her eat lettuce out of my hands for the REST OF MY LIFE."
Recordings, the first EP from Reptaliens, is set for release July 2016.
