NYC duo Refs reflect on past love on sonic soul track "Roots"
Dripping with soulful lamentation, "Roots" sees Refs use the mesmerising stripped-back beats as a cathartic expression of letting go of the past and accepting that sometimes love just doesn't work out.
The duo utilise soft electro atmospheres, opting for minimalist textures over extravangant production and through doing this they are able to create music that transports the listener directly into their world, where upon you are able to feel every emotion that they are expressing in all its clarity.
Richard Saunders' vocals are as smooth as velvet as they effortlessly glide along the electronic pathway that fellow musician Zachary Lipkins lays down for him. It all seems deceptively simple, where the sparse texture means that the heartache that sits at the centre of it only seems more genuine and relatable.
Explaining the inspiration behind the track and the different themes that it deals with, the pair say "A side effect of love stories that never fully play out is a looming sense of “if-only”. 'Roots' is about all the meandering semi-truths and ill-advised solutions we lean into and learn from, in the absence of that bloom."
