REFS returns with Girls-featured new single "Forever"
The latest offering from REFS, the moniker of songwriter, producer and musician Zachary Lipkins, "Forever" is a masterclass in how to make soulful pop.
Featured on last night's episode of HBO's Girls - which is always accompanied by a stellar soundtrack, and both Banks and Robyn have both contributed recently - the new single follows 2015's debut "Pain Goes Away".
"Forever" is most definitely a pop song above all else. Lipkins explains his relationship with the genre that has so often been derided in the past: "I think it was Tears for Fears where I was first like, wow, this is incredible music, but it’s also pop. That was sort of the bridge to pop music. Then I became invested in, okay, how could I take all these textures and environments that I’m familiar with and that are important to me and that I love and make it available for everybody to appreciate? I wanted to make stuff that I was really proud of, from where I was coming from.”
Lyrically, "Forever" captures a moment of inevitability, a path towards the end of a relationship and the uncertainty of that end. Richard Saunders offers his effortlessly soulful vocals on the track, as Lipkins' new-found pop sensibilites complete what is a perfect match.
