Rebecca & Fiona tear it up on ragged dance-pop belter "Party Hard"
Swedish dance-pop twosome Rebecca & Fiona unveil new track "Party Hard" and tell us all about their new EP of the same name.
The raucous new offering is a bona fide tune with ragged riffs and massive to-the-rafters vocals - it's got splashes Charli XCX and hints of Icona Pop, but Rebecca & Fiona's deliciously raw style is all their own.
Could you tell us about "Party Hard" - how did it come together?
Fiona FitzPatrick: We have actually been working on new material continuously during our tours, and we have released three of the songs, and now we felt that we needed to put out a little EP with a some more of the new tracks! It has been so much fun for us when we have played the new stuff out and people have liked it, so this is sort of a way for us to make the songs available for people who haven’t come to our shows.
Rebecca Scheja: The song "Party Hard" has been our party anthem with out friends for a while now, and now everybody can party hard Rebecca & Fiona style!
How does it fit into the EP?
Rebecca: We have been questioning the album format for a while now, it is a very slow way of releasing music? Now we are gonna try the EP thing, because when we finish a new track we just want to get it out there immediately!
Fiona: And our life together as Rebecca & Fiona is like a great party, so of course we made a song called "Party Hard", which we thought also suited as the EP’s title. The fans who likes the more melancholic side of our earlier songs won’t be disappointed though, the party in question is not just a fun, glamorous one, there are darker elements to it too.
What side of you does it show off?
F: We have been making more pop-oriented songs for a while now, but somehow the music we make never really loses the nightclub feeling, it is always hidden in some way or another in the music.
R: But this is definitely the most POP we ever sounded!
Was there anything you tried to do when you set out to make this EP?
R: We really wanted to speed up the process of releasing new music. But still approach it like a concept, I mean the songs we gathered for this release is still 'siblings'!
F: Yes, we cut some tracks that might become another EP in the future.
What have you learned from making the EP?
F: Making music is still the most fun thing we know, and maybe our love for creating moods and telling stories through music is stronger than ever.
R: You learn something new everytime you pick up a project to work a little bit on it, it is amazing.
What's the best party you've ever been to?
R: Where to begin!? We ARE the world's best party animals, and there are so many great ones we could tell you about…
F: Let’s say the whole summer tour, it was one big long party! We had a very huge and luxurious tour bus for the first time, and we met so many great people in every city!
R: We had champagne for breakfast in the bus while getting our hair done, we were in rap battles at afterparties with big Swedish rappers, we threw big dinners for the crew, we disobeyed sooo many 'No smoking' signs…
F: And every city could hear our bus coming from miles away because we always play very loud music!
And the worst?
R: If we find a party disappointing we always have a way to turn it around!
F: We don’t like it when there are too many record label people and their old friends in our dressing room after the show, we call it 'old people crowding' and have our assistant kick them out!
R: It’s okay if they want to congratulate, but no more than one Gin & Tonic on our expense, thank you very much!
What Swedish artists should we be listening to?
F: The scene is absolutely glittering with new stars right now! So many of them are ladies too, which of course is fun! Things ARE changing in the business!
R: Little Jinder, Duvchi, Mwuana, Niki and the dove, Sabina Ddumba. To name a few!
What are you working on next?
R: We are preparing to go back on tour this fall, so rehearsing and adding new songs to try out is on our schedule right now.
F: I want to start a YouTube channel and film Rebecca doing her makeup, she is so good at it.
R: And I can do one of you mixing drinks, you’re a very good bartender!
Do you have many plans for 2017 yet?
F: We are always planning the next year to be an even better one that the one we had.
R: Yes, the grand idea is to just keep doing what we are doing and enjoy ourselves as much as possible. And in what form that will be, you just have to wait and see ;)
