Listen: Rae Morris feat. Fryars - "Cold"
Having made a comeback of sorts at the beginning of the year with the beautifully beguiling “Skin”, Rae Morris continues to stake her claim as one of the most impressive young singer-songwriters in the UK.
Sitting somewhere between the accessible pop melancholia of Gabrielle Aplin and the intuitive songwriting qualities of Laura Marling, the young Blackpudlian has been honing her craft since the age of 16, and the relative experience is telling in this latest cut.
The catchy sensibilities of predecessor “Do You Even Know?” pour through thanks to another touchingly infectious chorus: “Cut me and my blood runs / Cut me and my blood runs cold for you”, Morris swoons with typical vocal poignancy. Once again she juxtaposes a pathetic message with an up-tempo, rhythmically unusual melody.
Having lent her beautifully characteristic voice to tracks on Bombay Bicycle Club’s latest effort, she now borrows Fryars’ crooning. Co-written and produced by the fellow London hopeful, he adds a certain sadness and context through the call-and-response-esque refrains.
Emerging alongside the announcement of her Atlantic-released debut due on 22 September, “Cold” leaves us anything but; it’s another track that foreshadows a gorgeous full-length to come.
