Promise and the Monster is both eerie and ethereal on new outing "Closed My Eyes"
Sweden's Promise and the Monster, aka Billie Lindahl, returns with the haunting yet celestial "Closed My Eyes", which also serves as a first taste of her upcoming EP Chewing Gum.
Lindahl's last Promise and the Monster release was 2016's Feed the Fire album, and today she's unveiled new song "Closed My Eyes".
Arriving ahead of Halloween, "Closed My Eyes" opens with low, rumbling electronica that acts as a ghostly figure against Lindahl's angelic yet haunting vocals. The whisper-like tone of her voice embodies a soothing nature similar to Jessica Pratt, but still maintains a ghostly feeling much like Chelsea Wolfe through the echoing vocal effect.
Promise and the Monster begins uncaging her voice towards the first chorus while the instrumentation becomes more foreboding. The introduction of jittery, skating strings and the faint yet consistent beat propels the song into the hazy horizon of the Chihuahuan Desert, dust clouds in tow.
Lindahl says of the new single, "I wrote "Closed My Eyes" surprisingly quickly after thinking about the ambiguity in that image, closing one's eyes for various reasons. It was good fuel. The women in this song are out roaming in the streets. Marilyn is famous and Kimberly and Brenda got killed by Ted Bundy. The song was pretty easy to record compared to the other songs - it was a Paranoid moment so to speak. You know when Black Sabbath recorded their album Paranoid they just needed an extra song and came up with that riff, and bam: history. It worked just that same way with this song."
"Closed My Eyes" is also the first release from Promise and the Monster since signing to Icons Creating Evil Art. She says of the signing, "I'm so pleased, together we can take this in a great new direction. I used to like writing quite cryptic stuff but I tried hard this time to get out of that safe haven and be more direct. The new songs often express the feeling of being that last person at the party, dancing slowly in the background, waiting for something to happen. Like a sad moonlight disco."
