Listen: Stairs to Korea – Paul, Is This How You Wanted It? (Body In The Thames remix)
Referring to Body in the Thames‘ vast reworking of ‘Paul, Is This How You Wanted It?’ – a highlight from Stairs To Korea‘s excellent Small Fractures EP – as a “remix” is almost enough to make me feel guilty. Rarely has the term done such injustice to a track as it manages here. The mysterious Stockholm-based Body in the Thames beats, batters and bruises Will Vaughan’s song to within an inch of its life, leaving it a barely recognisable, monstrous version of its original self; a pounding, visceral dance epic. Or, in the remixer’s own words on Twitter – and who could put it better? – “9 1/2 minutes of synth spazzing, breakbeats & vocal loops”.
It’s a whole three minutes until anything recognisable from the original version shows up – Vaughan’s distinctive vocals, chopped and looped, in which the choral line is just about audible: “When you’re feeling like you’re someone else.” It’s certainly a feeling Vaughan will be familiar with after this treatment.
