Listen: Powder Blue – “Play With Fire” (The Rolling Stones cover)
The sinewy squall of their single “Run” cemented Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based Powder Blue as a band to look out for. The psych-rockers’ newest recording finds them reaching back into 1965 for a new take on “Play With Fire” by The Rolling Stones, a track which originally appeared as a b-side to the Stones’ “The Last Time” before finding its way onto the US version of Out Of Our Minds.
Powder Blue transform their source material into a brooding swell that runs a full minute and a half longer than the original. Combining drone-based guitar grime and woozy keyboards with large, looming harmonies, the track completely reinterprets the lean, matter-of-fact atmosphere that characterized the Stones’ acoustic arrangement. This wholly arresting arctic blast of a cover treatment whets our appetites for future material from Powder Blue.
The band will be welcomed at Vangelis Tavern in their hometown of Saskatoon for a show on 30 May to celebrate their return to Canada following packed performances earlier this month at Liverpool Sound City, the Great Escape Festival, and other venues across Europe. Their debut full-length is anticipated for release later this year.
