Listen: Post Louis – “Book Your Skin”
Much of what we heard from London duo Post Louis on their 2013 debut EP, This Could Be A Bridge, was gloriously blown-out guitar courtesy of Robbie Stern (ex-Cajun Dance Party) neatly foiled by the choir-ready vocals of Stephanie Davin. To keep things spicy, brief pockets of sonic dissolution would pop up, giving it an arty edge, but always quickly recede back to the task at hand.
Not so this time around as Stern and Davin decide to go all-out art-chamber pop on latest single, “Book Your Skin”. We’re abruptly greeted with blinding feedback circled by a swarm of electronics, though swiftly giving way to Stern’s buoyant, but minimal, guitar and Davin’s heavenly vocals. There’s no rhythm, no percussion, nothing to root this down, but the faint shriek of feedback that persistently lies deep in the mix keeping everything from completely flying or floating away.
Which brings me to the novelty of Stern and Davin’s interplay here. Whereas last time out, they played as sonic counterpoints to each other, on “Book Your Skin” they are natural harmonies – Stern the bobbing and ebbing ocean and Davin the soaring sky. Fortunately, for us listeners, we’re sat blissfully at their core.
