Listen: Playlounge – Grandma Death
Part of the resurgent ‘let’s make as much noise as possible with two members’ movement – think Deap Vally, Drenge, and, um, the reborn PJ and Duncan – South London duo Playlounge make infectious lo-fi guitar-pop that’s the musical equivalent of a teenager’s bedroom: messy, chaotic and downright dirty.
Opening with scuzzy feedback, ‘Grandma Death’ morphs into a grungy, snowballing guitar riff with thrashing cymbals racing to keep up; only briefly stopping for the marching drum chorus. Lifted from a cassette store day split-release on Reeks Of Effort, which also features YRRS and Birdskulls, ‘Grandma Death’ slaps you round the face for a full two and a bit minutes, before soothing out with almost a minute’s worth of 80s drums and chilled synths.
It’s named in honour of the Donnie Darko character who mysteriously walks back and forth from her mailbox throughout the movie, perhaps she’s waiting for the delivery of some more Playlounge goodness.
