Introducing the gigantic talent of Pip Hall: listen to the lush new single "Devil You Don't"

At sixteen years old she's already released an EP this year in the form of Sisters, and will be following it up next year with her second release James. "Devil You Don't" is the first single from that extended player.

Based around a solid backbeat and burbling synth lines, the track builds to a chorus of fizzing guitars and a starring role for Hall's soulful, cracked and sulty voice. Part dark alt.rock dirge, part electropop sweetness, "Devil You Don't" is pretty special.

We spoke to Pip Hall to find out a little more about the singer and the song.

So just who is Pip Hall?

If I'm being honest I'm a socially awkward, self loathing teenager with issues bigger than I even care to admit. I confide in my music and that's how I deal with life I guess. I started making music at 12/13 with only the use of an iPad and a voice. It then progressed into what I'm doing now.

Who or what influences you?

I'm influenced by a great amount of people but if I had to put it down to why I started writing music it was first listening to Then Thickens that made me pick up a guitar and start taking all this seriously. Knowing that someone I know on a personal level can make such incredible music gave me the kickstart to write my own. It opened up a whole little world I never even knew existed and really made me feel at home. Besides that I grew up with Fleetwood Mac all the way back from Peter Green to Christine, Lindsay and Stevie and I'd be lying if I said I didn't envy what they do. They changed my view on music so much and I'm forever grateful for their existence. I've been through so many genres of music in my time of writing and it's eventually evolved into a sort of synthy rock and I guess that's down to when I was introduced to the likes of Bronski Beat, The 1975 and Arcade Fire.

What can you tell us about "Devil You Don't"?

"Devil You Don't" is one of the first songs I ever wrote and I'm glad that the first recordings of it got lost because it was truly awful. I didn't give up on it though, I saw potential and stuck with it even if it has taken me 3 years to finish. I talk about being alone a lot, especially in this song. It's also about the relationships between me and the people close to me, the fact that I've been betrayed and too afraid to stand up for myself so I willingly let people have the satisfaction of 'winning'. I also touched on the fact that I'm my biggest enemy, and an unknown one at that. My thoughts eat me alive and I build a wall around myself so much so that it's hard to be happy sometimes hence the lyrics "I build my walls so high I have no source of light".
