Listen: Pink Elephants - "Don't You Go"
Pink Elephants is the alter ego of 18-year-old Bradley Coy who describes his eclectic, often shoegaze-influenced sound as the product of having “musical ADHD”. Citing a wide range of artists as influences, from the fairly well established Animal Collective to the big guns such as The Cure and shoegaze forefathers My Bloody Valentine, “Don’t You Go” is impressively well-realised, released amongst an experimental collection of songs via both soundcloud and Bandcamp this year.
Any artist who describes their sound, even if it is somewhat tongue in cheek, as being geared towards “drug added, self hating youth”, is bound to channel the feeling of the hazy, halcyon days that often pepper the apathetic existence all teenagers experience at some point or another. With a downshifted guitar (masquerading with heavy bass tones) guiding the abstract mixture of sounds within Coy’s arrangement from A to B, “Don’t Go Away” is the extremely modern and current lovechild of dream-pop and shoegaze, with hints of electronica rearing its welcome head.
Coy’s subtle vocals ebb between the impressive, eclectic mixture of noises that carry “Don’t Go Away”. With elements that manage to both be in contention with one another, but continue to work in perfect harmony, Coy has created a piece of psychedelic, West Coast-tinged summer pop that manages to make the idea of teenage apathy endearing.
“Don’t Go Away”, alongside Pink Elephants’ other available demos, is almost the epitome of teenage wanderlust and uncertainty. However, despite stating that he can’t seem to settle in one place, musically, for too long, Coy has managed to channel his vast collection of influences into an exciting and arresting series of releases. Perhaps his ambiguity over honing a specific genre will be a blessing and not a curse. For Pink Elephants, the journey very much seems to be the destination, and if “Don’t Go Away” is anything to go by, Coy is heading in a remarkably interesting and intriguing direction.
