Oxford four piece Low Island debut with the sublime "Anywhere"
The textures of new band Low Island's music hit via an affecting mix of shuffling vocals and melodies that hit an emotive high on "Anywhere".
The band only formed recently and began life as the accidental by-product of a theatre score written by Jamie vocals/guitars/keys/electronics) and Carlos (vocals/guitar/keys). The pair had previously played with bassist Jacob as teenager in an alt-rock band and also had some success in dance music, with a residency at The Warehouse in Leeds. Percussionist Felix - who has toured with Brooklyn jazz ensemble Snarky Puppy - completes the line-up.
"This project has been a way of pooling together all of those various musical experiences," the band tell us and debut track "Anywhere" was written in the corner of a small bedroom on an old Roland keyboard.
"It's about loss," they say, "but the good bit, where people come together, and you hug your mum.’
