Overcoats explore the intricacies of romance through a crisp pop lens on “Hold Me Close”
“Hold Me Close”, the newest single from New York-based duo Overcoats, invokes the same tenderness as fellow New Yorkers Wet, with all the pop sensibilities of rising stars Sälen.
Overcoats is composed of former college roommates Hanna Elion and JJ Mitchell. The balance of their perfectly matched voices moving in measured harmony could be lifted from any number of acoustic releases. Laid over the crisp, well-paced pop of “Hold Me Close” however, the pair come away sounding anything but twee.
“Hold Me Close” is the lead single from upcoming full-length YOUNG, due out 21 April via Arts and Crafts Records. Where the album tells a full story of growing up as a young woman, “Hold Me Close” focuses more specifically on the intricacies of romance, a familiar narrative refreshed by Overcoats’ deft mastery of pop songwriting.
